An opportunity to add in demand skills to my skill set – Matthew's story

With pending Net Zero targets, increasing environmental agendas and a growing green economy – practical training is needed more than ever to upskill the workforce of the future.

The Learning Foundry’s Skills Bootcamps in Green Skills work to do just that. With the first cohort of learners coming to the end of their programme, we caught up with Matthew Dalton, a Graduate Asset Surveyor at The Regenda Group, to get his take on how the programme has helped in his current role and develop skill for the future...

“To me, green skills is all about having an understanding of the process and terminology around energy efficiency and applying retrofit components – and in my role this is usually within a home setting.

“The Learning Foundry’s Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills covers all components of energy efficiency and retrofit.

“For my current role as an Asset Surveyor, this means I can do EPC work within the properties I visit and liaise with external agencies who specialise in green energy solutions.

“My manager knew that these skills would be useful to have within our team – so it was them who told me about starting the course with The Learning Foundry.

“Being a recent graduate, finishing my degree in 2022, I am still keen to learn as much as I can. The Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills was an opportunity for me to add in-demand skills to my skillset.

“A Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills is also highly valuable as a standalone qualification. With this programme, I could get an entirely separate role to my current job, working as a Domestic Energy Assessor or Retrofit Coordinator. A course in green skills can definitely launch a career in its own right.

“While some of the content was similar to my degree – the course itself was far more practical. I was supported to use the relevant software needed in the field. So what you learn really translates to what you’ll do on the job

“The tutors were highly knowledgeable about the course and its content. They were responsive and eager to answer questions – about the subject or about course assessments. They went above and beyond.

“To anyone working in social housingcompleting a Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills is so valuable. There is funding available. There are so many pressures on the industry to meet requirements directly linked to green skills. You don’t have to want to become an energy assessor to benefit from these skills – everything you learn is so relevant.”

It’s what The Learning Foundry are all about – creating practical programmes with tangible opportunities for progression on the other side. We’re so excited to be rolling out our Skills Bootcamp in Green Skills across the North West, with the help of some additional funding from the Department of Education.

Courses will start from February 2024.
