Independence and confidence – Alisha's story

It’s National Apprenticeship Week and we’re having a great time shouting about all our fantastic apprentices. Alisha only started her apprenticeship in September and she’s already having a huge impact in her workplace, John Lennon Airport.

We caught up with Alisha to see how she’s finding life as an apprentice...

“Before I came to The Learning Foundry I was doing my A-Levels at sixth form – it was a rough time! I knew that uni wasn’t for me, but I feel like I just fell into going to sixth form because you feel like that’s what everyone else is doing after they finish their GCSEs.

“I went looking for an apprenticeship when I’d finished and it was actually my employer who put me in touch with The Learning Foundry – and I am really happy they did.

“I know already that an apprenticeship was definitely the right choice for me. I like the independence of studying when I want to. My managers, my business and The Learning Foundry are all really flexible around me and my learning.

“I love being independent. I really enjoy my sessions and (so far) I’m finding it easy to manage around my other work. My tutor is lovely, too, and so responsive. Whenever I get in touch with her she always gets back to me within the hour!

“It’s not like school at all. I have already developed great skills – I'm so much more confident, I’m speaking to people I would never have met otherwise, I can manage my time and I am even more patient!

“I’ve been able to work on amazing projects. I’ve been working on a sensory room inside the airport designed for people with hidden disabilities, like autism for example, who might find flying nerve-wracking!

“The sensory room was planned to be rolled out before COVID but it got pushed back so I was able to jump on board.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to my managers Chris and Christina and my Development Coach, Nicola for supporting me.

“I’m hoping I’ll be able to keep pursuing my career within aviation after my apprenticeship, too!”

Well done, Alisha! We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next.
