What are Green Skills?

What jobs need green skills? Who do they benefit? And why is everyone talking about them?

What are green skills?

Definition: “Green skills are the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society.” - United Nations.

Why are green skills important?

The United Kingdom has committed to no longer adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 2050 – the foundation of their net zero strategy.

More urgently, all EU countries have set a target of reducing energy consumption by over 11% before 2030.

Who needs green skills?

As part of this plan, there is a shift in demand for skills involved with the design, construction and assessment of technology used in these processes.

Those in related managerial positions will need upskilling to support these new, green activities.

That means you could be:

  • A tradesperson,

  • An engineer,

  • Working in construction or maintenance,

  • Working in property management,

  • Working in social housing,

  • A project manager.

When is the deadline for acquiring green skills?

With ambitious targets set for within the next five years, employers including government, local councils and utility providers are already listing green skills as an essential characteristic.

What next?

The Learning Foundry are delivering Skills Bootcamps in Green Skills – covering Energy Assessment and Retrofit Coordination – for people to upskill or retrain as suitable candidates in the growing green sector.

People are eligible regardless of their current employment status and courses are either partially or fully funded. Those working in housing associations or related industries may be eligible to full funding through the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.
